Scholarship Award: One of the 2025 recipients of The Veronica Willo Scholarship
College/University: Youngstown State University
Field of Study: Biology Pre-Med, BaccMed Program (BS/MD track)
Why did you choose your field of study?
From an early age, Joshua Macejko knew he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. Inspired by a personal family experience — watching a grandparent regain independence after joint replacement surgeries — he developed a passion for orthopedics and the life-changing difference that compassionate, skilled care can make.
“I want to help those who are in need of regaining their mobility and independence while improving their quality of life,” Josh shared.
How has The Veronica Willo Scholarship impacted your education?
The financial support of The Veronica Willo Scholarship has given Josh the ability to focus more fully on academics and make the most of opportunities at YSU.
“It has relieved me of long-term financial burdens. The scholarship allows me to focus more on my studies. I am also able to pursue research opportunities, which can be a valuable addition to a pre-med student’s college experience, and to join student organizations while at YSU and become involved in campus activities such as the Choose Ohio First Cohort, a class representative for the YSU Student Government Association for the College of STEM, and participate in intramural sports.,” he said.
What are your goals for the future?
Looking ahead, Josh plans to attend medical school after graduation from YSU and pursue a career as an orthopedic surgeon — a specialty that combines advanced technology, surgical skill, and a patient-centered approach.
He is particularly interested in learning more about prosthetics, fracture repair, and regenerative medicine, and hopes to intern with a sports medicine or orthopedic doctor as preparation for medical school.
Giving Back to the Community
In addition to professional goals, Josh also carries a deep appreciation for the Mahoning Valley community.
“I have loved growing up in a community full of so many wonderful people. I understand the importance of always giving back and serving our community, and I plan to carry on the tradition of helping the next generation in need one day.”
