MAHONING VALLEY, Ohio – The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley has awarded $722,414 through its second-quarter grant cycle, funding 55 nonprofits meeting the needs of local residents.
With support from fundholders and the Foundation’s discretionary funds, $293,235 was awarded through the CFMV General Grant. Meanwhile, three of CFMV’s supporting foundations accounted for more than half of funds disbursed this grant cycle; the Western Reserve Health Foundation awarded $152,500, the Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation awarded $152,090 and the William Swanston Charitable Fund awarded $88,000.
“As the Community Foundation grant review team – including staff, board members and community representatives – looked over the applications that came in, they were struck by the care, insight and expertise the Valley’s nonprofit community brings to the table every day,” says CFMV President Casey Krell. “We know that funding for nonprofits continues to be more uncertain than ever. We are honored to support their work in any way we can, whether through financial support, education and professional development, or networking and coalition building.”
In addition, two committee-led funds at the Community Foundation – the International Institute Funds and the Young Philanthropist Fund – made their annual awards, granting $30,651 and $5,938, respectively.
Created to support programs that meet the needs of foreign-born people in the Mahoning Valley and celebrate cultures from around the world, the International Institute Funds provided grants to Lit Youngstown ($500), Oak Hill Collaborative ($5,000), The English Center ($14,651), the YSU International Student Welcome Committee ($7,500) and YWCA Mahoning Valley ($3,000).
The Young Philanthropist Fund awarded $5,938 to Society of St. Vincent de Paul Northeast Ohio and Oak Hill Collaborative ($2,500 each), as well as The Butler Institute of American Art ($938) through its annual distribution. The fund is led by a committee of the Mahoning Valley Young Professionals to give the Valley’s future leaders an understanding of philanthropy and nonprofits serving the community.
The Community Foundation and its supporting foundations have two application deadlines remaining this year, on July 15 and October 15. Organizations can see grant opportunities, deadlines and start their application at CFMV.org/grants.
