TMHF Announces Grants for First Half of 2014

Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley

Warren, Ohio – The Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation today announced the award of $153,200 in grants to 10 health-oriented projects in Trumbull County.

The largest grant was $39,700 for the Warren Youth Fitness Challenge, a new nutrition education and physical fitness program of the Warren City Schools. This initiative will serve about 400 students who attend pre-school and middle school after-school programs at the schools and after-school childcare programs at the Warren YMCA and Warren YWCA.

The Fitness Challenge will include lessons on meal planning, cooking, gardening and nutrition, plus twice-a-week physical education sessions. It is part of a regional effort spearheaded by the Mahoning Valley Healthy Kids Coalition, which was established earlier this year through a grant from the William Swanston Charitable Fund.

“We are pleased to support this excellent and promising program for young people in Warren,” said Patrick K. Wilson, chair of the Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation and a lawyer with Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell in Warren. “Our hope is that the schools and their partners can establish a ‘best practice’ model that can be replicated in other communities.”

The foundation also granted:

  • $30,000 to the Children’s Rehabilitation Center in Howland for occupational and speech-language therapies for children whose families have limited financial resources.
  • $26,000 to the nursing program at Kent State University Trumbull Campus for the purchase of eight advanced simulation mannequins.

Other projects, grantees and amounts include the following:

  • STNA Training Program, American Red Cross, $6,880
  • Family Nutrition Program, Catholic Charities, $2,000
  • Project KIND, Community Solutions, $10,650
  • Special Navigator for Families with Special Needs, Help Hotline Crisis Center, $18,000
  • Vials for LIFE, Trumbull Mobile Meals, $2,425
  • GROW, Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership, $10,000
  • Youth Ready Workforce Program, United Methodist Center, $7,500

The Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation provides grants each year to initiatives that advance the health of Trumbull County residents. It has assets of more than $13 million. The foundation is the successor to the Trumbull Memorial Hospital Foundation, which was created by the hospital in 1976. Since 2012, the foundation has operated separately from the hospital as an affiliate of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.
